Artivism

It seems the idea of a web community for activism-inspired design and sustainably produced T-shirts has caught on. With more than 1,800 members worldwide and hundreds of designs submitted, it looks like people really 'do' want T-shirts with meaning.

We had some doubts along the way. Would artists engage with the concept? Would we find high quality organic Tees? Could we print them in an eco-friendlier way? Well so far the answer has been a resounding 'yes', and we're thrilled with the results – six designs from six very talented artists...view here...

SAQA Registration: Time to Celebrate

Dear Parents, Students and CFAD Stakeholders,

We have great news!

Since I joined CFAD in January 2000, my main task was to bring the institution's qualifications in line with the South African Qualifications Authority's (SAQA), and Council on Higher Education (CHE) requirements. In our pursuit of being a provider of quality qualifications, CFAD needed to be registered with these bodies as well as the Department of Education.
But for several years now, we were listed on SAQA’s database as provisionally registered, pending the completion of certain outstanding requirements. Over the past few years it was difficult to ascertain the exact nature of these requirements. I am pleased to report that as a result of a meeting I had with Mr Samuel Isaacs, the Chief Executive of SAQA, the uncertainty of our registration status has been resolved.

On the 28th August I received a letter from Dr Sharma Bhika, Director: Standards Setting and Development (DSSD), SAQA
The letter states:”Please accept my apologies that the registration has taken such a long time, in addition, communication from SAQA officials responsible for the processing has been extremely poor. We will do all in my power to prevent such a situation arising again. It has been ascertained that the qualification was registered, but its status had not been changed on the SAQA website, due to an administrative oversight by my directorate relating to the inclusion of the word “multimedia” in the title. The matter has been rectified and the qualification will appear on the SAQA website as registered as from Friday, 29 August 2008.

The qualification is registered as follows:
Title: Diploma: Integrated Fine Art, Animation and Design (MultiMedia)
SAQA ID: 49414

From the the first day we opened in 1994, we have been a provider of quality training. The registration and recognition of our institution by SAQA provides peace of mind to our students, parents and stakeholders. This is a great achievement for us. We thank everyone who has been with us through this difficult but enlightening process.

Yours in quality education.

Happy Birthday Nelson Mandela

“Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that a son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.”

SABC Goes big at this year’s Durban Film Festival 2008

The 23rd of July 2008 sees the beginning of the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF). This year’s DIFF promises to let the international production and media industry know that South Africa is a force to be reckoned with. The SABC will be presenting over 300 films from around the world with a special focus on South African and African films. As the proud partner of the 29th instalment of DIFF, the SABC through this festival, strengthens the South African film and television industry and brings a host of industry expertise, film networks, local and international media highlighting and stimulating our progressive film industry.

“DIFF is one platform that the SABC uses to continue to promote local programmes and content from the African continent. This initiative not only aims to showcase the best production but endeavours to promote a united Africa. We are especially excited to be a partner at this year’s festival as we have a lot of exciting plans and announcements to make, says Mvuzo Mbebe, Group Executive for Content Enterprises Division.
As part of it’s commitment to promoting the development of the local film industry, the SABC has incorporated a cultivating programme line up with workshops that will take place throughout Durban during the festival. Some of the workshops that will take place are:
The “Cash flowing the rebate workshop - hosted by SABC & DTI, this workshop aims to answer questions around the criteria for accessing the rebate and explores co-production between broadcaster and producer. DTI directors and SABC executives will be present with an open floor for filmmakers.

The SABC’s Digital Terrestrial Television and New Media team /leader will be on the panel to provide the industry with an insight into the relationship between digital migration and new media from a broadcaster perspective in the workshop “Mediating the Media convergence”.
DIFF in partnership with the SABC will be hosting the Talent Campus initiative. The “Student Reel” initiative, a six-day program that touches on essential issues of filmmaking such as story development, cinematographic styles, production models and new markets, is run successfully at the Berlin International Film Festival, with campuses in New Delhi, Sarajevo and Buenos Aires. It brings together aspiring talents and experienced film professionals from all over the world. It affords young up and coming filmmakers and students an opportunity to have their films screened on national television in the different countries they are in. This slot ran successfully on SABC television from October 2007 to March 2008 and will be back on screens later in the year.
An open floor discussion around international formats vs. local formats will be discussed in the “Can our content be formatted” workshop. This workshop will be focusing on discussions around whether South African content allows itself to be formatted and whether this is the genre to break the American ceiling?

In “Fiction scripting docu-ganda” - Films that are portrayed as fact based but actually have an agenda are discussed. The discussion covers issues of the filmmaker becoming a dispassionate observer speaking with the voice of God. This style of filmmaking has a strong point of view similar to fictional writing but unlike fiction it claims to inform the audience. This workshop asks whether the honey moon between fiction and docu-ganda is over and whether media gatekeepers are realizing that this cross-pollination demands higher media literacy from audiences.

“Word of mouth” is a workshop to inform the industry on the importance of subtitling especially in the new media and digital environment.

Prominent local animators and animation companies will feature at the “Cartooning the tube” workshop to discuss the cost viability of animation for television and local animated films. Various animation styles will be on view on screens around the venue. In line with this discussion, the SABC children genre department with will launch their exciting, innovative animation strand -“Seeing the world through 3D on the 29th of July.

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS AT ARTSPACE DURBAN

Broll and King: Paint and Process

Terri Broll and Terence King are artists with a commitment to the richness of abstraction in painting. King’s work is rooted in observation, chiefly of the figure, whereas Broll draws on intuitive processes in the discovery of her subject matter. Both hold an interest in the interactive and interdependent process between artmaking and the objectivity of the painted surface. In this exhibition Broll and King present recent work reflecting their long-held interests in problems of figuration and abstraction. Both artists come from academic backgrounds in the visual arts, have exhibited extensively and are represented in private and public collections here and internationally.

On Saturday, 5 July Terri Broll will be conducting a "Art and Working Skills: An Introductory
Workshop" 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the studios at artSPACE durban. If interested in finding out more contact Terri on terribroll@gmail.com or 083-477-5599.

AND IN THE MIDDLE GALLERY:

"Us" an exhibition by Kieran Smith

"Us" explores familiar people in Kieran¹s life. Here he takes a step away from the iconic subject matter of his prior projects to the intimate and personal world immediately around him. Many images of his friends were downloaded off Facebook. Kieran is interested in the dramatic, expressive quality of materials used and eschews all delicacy in favour of harsh, brash
marks made of smears of sand, glue and paint; grit in favour of gloss.

29th Durban International Film Festival

Cinema in all its diversity will once again be celebrated at the 29th Durban International Film Festival which runs from 23 July to 3 August. Featuring more than 200 films from more than 95 countries, spread over more than 300 screenings at 26 venues across the city, the festival will bring together established masters of cinema and innovative new talents from around the world. Alongside the presentation of the some of the year’s finest films, the festival will run an extensive workshop and seminar programme giving the regions aspirant filmmakers an opportunity to learn from and be inspired by some of cinema’s greats.

Under the banner Love Film, Hate Xenophobia, the festival will present films such as Darrell James Roodt’s Zimbabwe, which looks at the arduous journey a young woman makes from Zimbabwe to South Africa; Penny Woolcock’s Exodus which imagines a near-future England in which foreigners are incarcerated in a ghetto; the moving Canadian film Family Motel about Somalian refugees; Victims of Our Richness, which dissects the exploitation and brutality experienced by desperate Malian migrants; and a selection of specially commissioned films under the banner Filmmakers Against Racism made specifically about the xenophobic
attacks.

The selection of films will also see some of the world’s finest and most critically-acclaimed directors represented by their new works including Gus Van Sant (Paranoid Park), Abolfazl Jalili (Hafez), Buddhadeb Dasgupta (The Voyeurs), Brillante Mendoza (Slingshot and Foster Child), Atom Egoyan (Adoration), George Clooney (Leatherheads), Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Banishment), Santosh Sivan (Before The Rains), Doris Dorrie (Cherry Blossoms - Hanami), Fatih Akin (The Edge Of Heaven), Takeshi Kitano (Glory To The Filmmaker), Jiri Menzel (I Served The King Of England), Eran Riklis (Lemon Tree), Josef Fares (Leo), Bela
Tarr (The Man From London), Harmony Korine (Mister Lonely), Pen-ek Ratanaruang (Ploy) and Carlos Reygadas (Silent Light).

Says Nashen Moodley, DIFF’s manager and programmer: “While the selection boasts a number of festival regulars and favourite directors, the very exciting thing about this year’s programme is the large number of new filmmakers represented. The festival of 2008 will be one of discovery: an introduction to and celebration of the next generation of cinematic legends.”

The festival will once again shine a spotlight on the cinema of Africa under the African Perspectives theme, presenting the World Premieres of Nothing But The Truth by John Kani, which is based on his popular play; My Black Little Heart by Durban’s Claire Angelique, a dark look at Durban’s underbelly; and uMalusi, directed by Mlandu Sikwebu and produced and shot by Jahmil X.T. Qubeka.

Other themes and focus areas include New German Cinema, Indian Cinema, A Focus On Italian Cinema, a selection of a number of films making up the European Union Film Focus, as well as a series of films on music. August is Woman’s Month in South Africa, and DIFF is pleased to
present films about women and films made by over forty women directors, including, amongst others, 3 Women by Manjeh Hekmat and Unfinished Stories by Pouraya Azarbayjani, both set in Iran; Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Frozen River by Courtney Hunt about two single mothers; a Palestinian woman’s struggle against Israeli paranoia and bureaucracy in Lemon Tree; Lucy Walker’s Blindsight about six blind Tibetan students climbing Mount Everest; Stephanie Black’s compelling unpacking of Bob Marley’s message in Africa Unite ; and the world premiere of Karen Slater’s 50 Years of Love which addresses the institution of marriage and its relevance in today’s society.

As the films unspool, a group of young African filmmakers will participate in Talent Campus Durban, an intensive 5-day programme of workshops held in cooperation with the Berlinale Talent Campus which forms part of the Berlin International Film Festival. Under the theme
“Producing African Cinema for a New World”, participants will benefit from both theoretical and practical approaches that enhance their cinematographic and creative experience. The overall objective is to empower a new generation of African filmmakers. In this period of
social unrest wrongly targeting “foreigners” the Talent Campus Durban, with its 40 participants representing 19 countries, can demonstrate the art of African collaboration in action and celebrate the creative strength of diversity.

Principal screening venues of DIFF 2008 are Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre; Nu-Metro Cinecentre - Suncoast; Ster Kinekor Musgrave, Cinema Nouveau - Gateway; Ekhaya Multi-Arts Centre in KwaMashu; KwaSuka Theatre, and the BAT Centre, with further screenings in township areas where cinemas are non-existent, and a special programme of screenings at Luthuli Museum on
the North Coast.

Programme booklets with the full screening schedule and synopses of all the films are available free at cinemas, Computicket, and other outlets. Full festival details can also be found on www.cca.ukzn.ac.za or by calling 031 2602506 or 031 2601650.

About the Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design

The Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design (CFAD) is a tertiary institution that offers training in Fine Art, Animation (2D and 3D) and Graphic Design. The CFAD was established in 1994 by world-renowned cartoonist, illustrator and journalist Nanda Soobben. Prior to the establishment of the CFAD various individuals approached Nanda Soobben with the desire to learn his skills. It was from this need in the community that the institution was born. In recognition of his contribution to South African society and for establishing this institution, Nanda Soobben received the San Francisco Leadership Award. The Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design has developed an integrated fine art, graphic design and animation diploma that equip artists with marketable skills. In the past many fine art graduates found it difficult to secure jobs, however graduates of CFAD have found it easier to secure employment in the local printing, advertising and media industry. Several successful graduates are now employed internationally.

Krish Moodley, Academic Head of CFAD, and a team of dedicated artists and designers have developed the institution into a leading Centre of Design excellence in Durban. Today, students from as far a field as the United States, Japan, India, Botswana and Zimbabwe are registered at the institution. As part of its commitment to quality education the institution is provisionally registered with the Department of Education, South African Qualifications Authority and the Council on Higher Education as a Private Higher Education Institution.

“Across the Pond”

Above painting: "Drift Wood"
“Across the Pond” is the title of an exhibition of new paintings by London artist Sandira Reddy. This collection has been inspired by her time spent in America and will be on show at The Boy’s Club, 68 Boleyn Rd, Dalston, N16 8JG. The exhibition runs from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th June.

“The light is completely different in the US,” says Reddy, when comparing how her creative process is altered by painting in the US North East and Hawaii.
“ More seductive than erotic, calming, even cleansing, perhaps spiritual” states New York art collector David Mafoud, who owns one of her pieces. The “Across the Pond” exhibition captures inspiration from the natural world from a variety of distances, ranging from intimately close to vastly afar. This may reflect the distance she has had in the past few years from her home in London and her birthplace, South Africa.

Sandira Reddy’s formal training began at the acclaimed Central St Martins College of art and design. During that time her work was selected as part of a collective exhibition that was held at Notting Hill Arts Club. She then went on to complete a BA (Hons) degree in Graphic design at Kingston University.

“My style has really developed and grown over the past few years” she says “and this collection is a reflection of that change. I’m very excited to present this work”
The painting above is called "Terrace Shadows", acrylic on canvas.

EDUCATIONAL EXCHANGE BETWEEN STUDENTS FROM REUNION ISLAND, PROTEA SECONDARY,CHATSWORTH AND CFAD

ICFC (International Committee for Cooperation), organised an educational and cultural exchange programme between students of Lycee Stella, a secondary school in the Reunion Island, and students of Protea Secondary in Chatsworth. The programme took place in March this year.

ICFC initiated this programme to foster international person to person contact and to encourage friendship, educational and cultural exchanges. The aim of ICFC is to bring together students from India, Mauritius, Reunion Island and South Africa. For this particular programme ICFC chose Protea Secondary in Chatsworth as the school that received the students from Reunion Island.

The history of the Indians on Reunion Island is very similar to the history of South African Indians. Much like the Indians who were brought to this country to work on the sugar cane plantations as indentured labourers; the mainly South Indians were taken to Reunion Island as slaves to work on the tobacco and sugar cane plantations. The cultural and religious practices are similar to South African Indians. The difference is that Reunion Island was colonised by the French and here we follow an English way of life. This sets an interesting backdrop for the exchange between the students of Protea Secondary and the French speaking students of Reunion Island.

ICFC President, Rajen Reddy (CEO of KZN Oils), stated: “We provided our visitors a well rounded programme that included visits to tourist destinations in Kwazulu Natal, as well as interaction with the people of Chatsworth. The students enjoyed the warmth of the Chatsworth community as they lived in the homes of the Protea Secondary students.”

The French students also interacted with students at the CFAD Campus, Durban. Krish Moodley, ICFC Education Chairperson said:"We live in a global environment where everything is inter-connected therefore it is important to expose students to various influences and to a variety of cultural and educational practices. The visitors were treated to their first taste of a hot Durban delicacy at CFAD, The Bunny Chow! They thoroughly enjoyed the experience."

A NEW EXHIBITION OPENS AT THE KZNSA ON TUESDAY 11 MARCH 2008
EXHIBITIONS CLOSE 30 MARCH 2008

The KZNSA is pleased to announce that its two upcoming exhibitions will show a selection of star students from two of Durban’s prestigious institutions of learning: the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and the Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design (CFAD). The participating artists were selected according to their academic excellence, technical mastery and conceptual depth. Collectively they represent the cream of the crop of mature students from the two schools, and give an indication of the future of South African fine art and animation production.

TOON AGE MOMENTS: Animation Projects by Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design showcases the animation projects completed by CFAD. Social satire, observation and commentary are key to many of these works. Taxi, by lead animators Zayne Nakamura and Ryan Janse Van Rensburg, deals with Durban public transport. Birds relates to environmental issues. Also on view is an animated 3D robot created by Chris De Jaager.

The majority of animation projects and assignments completed at the private art school are industry-based, with students having created award-winning clips for Life-Line, the World Wildlife Fund, Childline and a range of HIV and AIDS awareness campaigns.

CFAD was established in 1994 by Nanda Soobben to provide previously disadvantaged students with access to the latest computer, animation and design technology and has, since then, developed into a contemporary, thriving art school where a system of mentorship is used as the educational methodology. CFAD works closely with the Parsons School of Design in New York, the San Francisco Art Institute, the University of California and the National Institute of Design (NID) in India. The centre’s close relationship with the design and printing industries, and with the education sector, allows students to participate and contribute to “live” projects. CFAD’s Academic Director, Krish Moodley said,”This is the first for Durban. This exhibition proves that this city has the animators and resources to produce high quality short form and long form animation.”

Toon Boom Animation now in Durban

The world’s top animation software is being taught for the first time in Durban. The Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design (CFAD) is the first tertiary institution in Durban to offer training in Toon Boom Animation. The Canadian based Toon Boom Animation software company chose CFAD as the preferred training institution in Durban. Toon Boom is the perfect training tool for any student embarking on a career in animation production and the software is recognized as the industry standard cartoon animation tool in the world’s top production houses for all media platforms.
Popular animated stories like the Simpsons and Sponge Bob are created using Toon Boom animation software.

Established in 1994 by Nanda Soobben to provide previously disadvantaged students with access to the latest computer, animation and design technology, CFAD has been developed into a modern, thriving art school where through a system of mentorship, students can develop strong design and animation skills. Nanda Soobben, who apart from producing daily cartoons for major newspapers, also works on animated films commissioned by television studios, supervises the animation programme at CFAD. Soobben’s book of cartoons, “Witness to a Decade” has become a sought-after collector’s item as it serves as a controversial record of South Africa’s first 10 years of democracy. He has also won the prestigious Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award for 2006. In 2007 Soobben was presented with awards from the San Francisco Leadership Academy, the Mayor of San Francisco and the United States Congress in recognition of his achievements as a cartoonist, animator and journalist.

Krish Moodley, Academic Director of CFAD stated: “The skills obtained here are highly marketable and over the past fifteen years this institution has produced high quality graduates who are employed as graphic designers, animators, web designers and creative directors at major organisations both locally and in countries such as Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.”
