SA's Got Talent, Darren Rajbal at CFAD

SA's Got Talent winner Darren Rajbal attended the opening of the CFAD 2009 Student Portfolio Exhibition in Durban. Nanda Soobben presented the original cartoon to Darren that celebrates his win as South Africa's newest star. The cartoon draws attention to Darren's win and the arrival of the indentured Indians to this country 149 years ago. Darren's warmth and charm won over the students and parents as he accepted the cartoon and thanked all his fans for their support.
Nanda Soobben has offered Darren, who is also keen on becoming a cartoonist and animator, a sponsorship for fees to study the Integrated Fine Art Animation and Design Diploma. Darren will be joining the CFAD student body during the 2010 academic year.

Durban’s Most Famous Art School opens in Jo’burg

In a recent Department of Communication discussion paper on local and digital content, Animation has been identified as an area requiring urgent development. The animation industry is rapidly developing in South Africa as the world's appetite for animation increases. American, Canadian and European animation production companies would like to bring production work to South Africa, as it is an English Speaking country. Local demand for short form animation in commercials is also increasing. The handful of institutions offering animation as a course cannot supply high quality animators fast enough for the growing demand.

It is with this demand that Johannesburg, as the country’s leading producer of moving images will benefit from the establishment of the CFAD Jo’burg Campus in 2010. Heading the Johannesburg campus is award winning producer and former Subject Adviser for Art, Shan Moodley. In the early eighties Moodley quit education to concentrate on television production. He joined the SABC in 1980 and produced such memorable shows as Police File, Prime Time, No Jacket required and Pop Shop. In 1997 Shan Moodley was appointed the first chairperson of the National Film and Video Foundation. In recent years he has consulted to the cultural and communications industries, developing policies and strategic documents.Link
The CFAD three-year integrated diploma in multimedia incorporates animation and TV commercial production. It is the only graphic design diploma that has an integrated approach giving graduates flexibility to work in a variety of areas within the design industry. Arts commentator, Peter Machen recently wrote that CFAD is an extremely well resourced education centre that puts most other design schools to shame. He also remarked that there is a constant buzz of activity and the work experience at firms is an important element of Soobben's approach to training young minds. CFAD CEO and founder, Nanda Soobben and Academic Director Krish Moodley will be working closely with Shan Moodley and his team at the Jo’burg Campus to ensure that the campus maintains the tradition of producing high quality, competent and employable graduates.

MINE: KZNSA Professional Practice Course

MINE presents bodies of work in a sweeping variety of media, with vibrant oils and acrylics telling important stories of everyday life, moody graphite adding grainy depth drawn from life, funky animation that saunters in and out of absurd situations, outrageously delicious lightboxes, the movement of wind-swept landscapes captured in collaged hard copy, and a strange, warped and totally new form of photography that simulates the folding twists of our dynamic environment.

Elizabeth Sparg, Renee Leslie, Simmi Dullay, Lesley Magwod-Fraser, Angie Arbuthnot, Bheki Kambuhle, Mbekeni Mbili, Cally Lotz and Lee Scott Hempson are the participants in the second KZNSA Professional Practice Course. Over the past three months, this group has engaged in an interactive process of theory and practice in exploring the essential requirements of how to make it big in the art world.

The title of their exhibition – MINE – alludes to one of the core requirements of success in this highly competitive field: the development of a visual language that is unique, bold, and exciting; that says something new and says it in a manner that has never been seen before. The provocative manipulation of matter and materials defies the traditional, adds depth to the contemporary, and re-defines the artists within the context of their highly specific lives.

EXHIBITION OPENS ON TUESDAY, 17 NOVEMBER 2009 AT 6PM
ARTISTS’ WALKABOUT ON SATURDAY, 21 NOVEMBER AT 10AM
ARTISTS’ RESEARCH SEMINAR PRESENTATIONS ON THURSDAY, 26 NOVEMBER AT 6PM
EXHIBITION CLOSES ON SUNDAY, 29 NOVEMBER 2009 AT NOON

VANSA

The Visual Arts Network of South Africa is an umbrella organisation serving the interests of visual arts practitioners. Its membership consists of individual visual arts practitioners, curators and administrators, as well as organisations, companies, institutions and service providers that participate in or serve the visual arts sector. VANSA does not seek to replace or duplicate the functions of existing organisations and structures in the sector – it exists to promote greater unity and internal cooperation and communication within the visual arts.

VANSA was formed by leading figures in the visual arts sector from across South Africa in 2003 in response to the absence of a national structure that could represent the interests of the sector and systematically and constructively address the historical imbalances (in terms of access and opportunity) that continue to characterise the sector.

Nanda Soobben honoured by Heritage Awards

Nanda Soobben has added much to the cultural life of South Africa, writes Peter Machen

When I meet Heritage Award recipient Nanda Soobben at his Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design, he is sitting at a desk in the foyer of the school. It is from this desk, which in most other such institutions would be occupied by a receptionist, that Soobben produces his daily political cartoons, which have over the years appeared in the pages of many of this country's newspapers, as well as being syndicated around the world. And as I talk to him, Soobben's position at that front desk, rather than in a fancy, private office, comes to signify much about his approach to life, art, business and education. It is an approach that, despite the legacy of apartheid and its impact on Soobben's life, has gradually been reaping rewards for him in recent years. He has been internationally recognised for his hard-hitting satirical cartoons, winning many awards, most recently Vodacom Journalist of the Year in the cartoon category. And the education of all these young minds at his school is clearly also a reward in itself.
Because while Soobben has blazed a trail for black cartoonists in contemporary South Africa, in the process providing a bitingly insightful analysis of post-apartheid South Africa, he is also opening the doors for young new South African design talent with his school which opened in 1994. The Centre is one of the only places that offers an integrated Fine Art and Graphic Design Diploma as well as a Higher Diploma in Animation, and through the school, Soobben is generating a conscious new breed of graphic designers and artists.
He shows me around the school, which despite the absence of 21st century sheen, is an extremely well resourced education centre that puts most other design schools to shame. There is a constant buzz of activity, although most of the students are not in the building but doing work experience at firms, an important element of Soobben's approach to training young minds. He shows me a reel of animated shorts produced by his students. The shorts are all very different, but what they have in common is a sharp sense of commentary and a wildy off-the-wall approach, something that has no doubt filtered down from the front desk.
But despite his success, Nanda Soobben remains one of Durban's most unsung talents. As a young man, he was a gifted artist and graphic designer, but like many black creative people under apartheid, he was forced into exile until the early '90s, as there was no space in the old South Africa for dissident creative expression and graphic design was a “whites-only” occupation. And even today, because of the legacy of apartheid, Soobben remains marginalised to an extent. He compares Zapiro and himself to Gary Player and Papwa Sewgolum. Which is not say that Zapiro endorses the status quo as Player did, but that his success, relative to Soobben, is in some ways about his whiteness and a white-owned media.
It is appropriate that Soobben has been recognised by the Heritage Awards. The legacy that he has built is substantial. His collected body of cartoons reflects a national diary of the past two and a half decades, his school is an important cog in the national creative engine of South Africa, and his international presence has helped teach the world a little more about South Africa. And, in another example of his ongoing desire to encourage courage and individuality, Soobben has even set up his own small awards ceremony, the TLTL (Too Little Too Late) Awards, which are given to individuals who contribute unselfishly to the community without the recognition they deserve.
But most importantly, Soobben, along with a handful of other South African cartoonists, continues to help ensure that the space for dissent in South Africa remains available to all of us.

The Heritage Awards is a high-profile annual event which sees six phenomenal South Africans honoured for their contribution towards the preservation and promotion of South African heritage and culture. The other five awardees are Johnny Clegg, Bheki Mseleku, Noria Mabasa, Jay Pather and Alfred Nokwe. The awards ceremony took place on Saturday 19 September at at the ICC Durban at a glittering function.

Animated Advert Bootcamp

7th September to 18th September 09

This year CFAD is introducing an Animated Advert Bootcamp. This is a compulsory activity for all students. The Bootcamp will run over two weeks, starting the 7th September 2009, ending 18th September 2009. Each year the Final Year students at CFAD are required to complete a Public Service Announcement Advert as part of their diploma programme and are also encouraged to enter their PSA’s in the very popular, Vuka Competition.

The Vuka Competition encourages students to design and produce new adverts every year to help make the public aware of serious issues such as Alcohol Abuse, HIV and various charitable causes. The winning team of the Vuka Competition gets their advert flighted on DSTV and M-Net. Prize money will also be awarded to the winning team for their winning advert. Besides entering the best PSA’s into the Vuka Competition, CFAD will screen the best PSA’s at the RED EYE and Celebrate Durban this September.

Students will be working in groups consisting of First year students, Second year students and a Final year student appointed as the Creative Director of the team. The reason for this group structure is to ensure that students are exposed to a variety of talented artists with a range of skill sets. For example, the first year students will pick up some computer skills by working with the second and third year students and will get a taste of what to expect in the senior years of the diploma. The third year students will benefit a great deal as they would be equipped with the skills of leading and mentoring a team of people to achieve the results of a brilliant finished product. Soon, the second year students will get their chance to be Creative Directors. The other advantage is that the students will also add these adverts to their portfolio each year and that alone is an important part of our diploma programme.

Visit the CFAD website for pics of the teams...

Graduation Message

At the graduation each year I look for an appropriate message for the graduating class. Our Chairman of the Advisory Board, Mr Ravi Govender, spoke about the challenges faced by most ordinary people in our country. He also touched on the responsibility that designers have.
I agreed with this sentiment and reminded the graduates that its artists and designers who shape the world.
This year my message to the class of 2008 was very simple: Never give up!
A few days ago, I was reminded that the storm is always greatest just before the calm.
We are experiencing such a storm in the form of the global recession that is certainly affecting us all.

Graduation Dinner, Fashion Extravaganza and TLTL Awards

CFAD (Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design) in Durban’s CBD will host their Annual Graduation Dinner, Fashion Extravaganza and TLTL Awards Ceremony at the DLI Hall in Greyville on August 21st.

The coveted event – now in its ninth year – sees three significant events rolled into one fabulous evening. A sit-down banquet in the atmospheric DLI Hall provides the backdrop for the Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design’s most important annual event.

A highlight of the evening is the tertiary institution’s acknowledgment of unsung heroes instrumental in weaving the complex fabric of our community. “The TLTL - Too Little Too Late - Awards are given to individuals who contribute unselfishly to the community without the recognition they deserve. Most South African artists have highlighted the plight of the struggle for freedom, and through their work people were able to break the silence,” said CFAD founder Nanda Soobben.

This year the TLTL awardees are The Consulate Six – Billy Nair, George Sewpersad, Archie Gumede, MJ Naidoo, Paul David and Mewa Ramgobind. These six political activists protested against Britain’s strong ties with the then South African government and as a protest action “took refuge” in the British Consulate building in Durban – some of them for up to ninety days. This act of defiance helped to put the anti-apartheid issue firmly on the international agenda. Interestingly Paul David is also a 2009 recipient of a Satyagraha Award: The Mahatma Gandhi annual Award for Reconciliation and Peace.

The Edge Award, also to be presented at this gala evening, for Art and Media achievement goes to Karen Bradke of ArtSPACE Durban and Berlin. Bradtke is a tireless promoter of local art-makers and with the opening of artSPACE Berlin, she acts as a conduit for South African art abroad and showcases international art locally. This award celebrates her contribution and pays tribute to local heroes who have received little or no recognition in the media.

The formality of the institution’s graduation and awards ceremony is a counterpoint to the fun, fantastical and frivolous organic fashions created by undergrad design students that address the challenges of waste with a focus on recycling. This year the designers are all working to the theme of Superheroes to be interpreted literally, figuratively or symbolically.

“Started in 2000, this fashion design project is an opportunity to stretch the creativity of the graphic design students and to explore a unique solution to the age-old problem of pollution,” says Krish Moodley, CFAD Academic Director who devised the fashion show concept.

Krish Moodley also the show’s executive producer, Danny Moodliar fashion maestro, and CFAD staff Larina Naicker, Mischen Lutchman and student volunteers, will be assisting with the evening’s overall creative success. The garments will be shown on a ramp, but will also be presented as an integral part of a dramatic extravaganza, mixing live action with big screen images.

The Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design (CFAD) is a tertiary institution that offers training in fine art, animation (2D and 3D) and graphic design. The CFAD was established in 1994 by world-renowned cartoonist, illustrator and journalist Nanda Soobben. It is from a need in the community that the institution was born. Nanda Soobben, academic head Krish Moodley and a team of dedicated artists and designers have developed the institution into a leading centre of design excellence in Durban. Today, students from as far a field as USA, Japan, India, Botswana and Zimbabwe are registered at the institution. As part of its commitment to quality education, the institution is provisionally registered with the Department of Education, SA Qualifications authority and the council on higher education as a private higher education institution.

Naked: Creative Collective

Following on the success of the Naked and Red Eye parties - contemporary
fusions of art, music, fashion and dance - comes "Naked: Creative
Collective".

It all happens in the Durban City Hall precinct on Saturday May 16 with the current exhibitions at the Durban Art Gallery as a backdrop and inspiration, artists will express their talent with fashion, slam poetry, dance, music and installation performances.

The line-up includes Ewok, the Midsummer Night's Dream cast, Spit Munky, DJs Funky G and Rolly, Hetto Playaz and highlights from Jomba! The edgy fashion element comes from the Linea Academy whose new generation students were encouraged to explore "fashion as activism". Their garments will be integrated into a performance work choreographed by award-winning David Gouldie and members of the Flatfoot Dance Company. From 9pm the action moves across the road to the King Club in the Playhouse complex where the "put it out there" Dirty Skirts indie rock band will get the party pumping.

The four-piece band from Cape Town released their debut album, On a Stellar Bender, in 2007 and have since played on every main stage of SA's festival circuit and toured the UK, USA and United Arab Emirates.

Tickets for part one of Naked: Creative Collective at the DAG and the after-party at King Club are R40 (available at the door). Tickets for the after-party only are R50 (available at the door).
