Petition: The Three Elephant Sculpture

The eThekwini Municipality (Durban, South Africa) has stopped work on the Three Elephant installation it contracted sculptor Andries Botha to do based on the political interpretation of this work by the local African National Congress . This action is a marked departure from the freedoms that the citizens of the Republic of South Africa have afforded artists to express themselves without fear of political interference.

TLTL - Too Little Too Late - Award

The Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design in Durban’s CBD will host the Annual Graduation Dinner, Fashion Extravaganza and TLTL Awards Ceremony – themed “Celebration” at the DLI Hall in Greyville on Friday 27 August, 2010.

A highlight of the evening is the tertiary institution’s acknowledgment of unsung heroes instrumental in weaving the complex fabric of our community. “The TLTL - Too Little Too Late - Awards are given to individuals who contribute unselfishly to the community without the recognition they deserve. Most South African artists have highlighted the plight of the struggle for freedom, and through their work people were able to break the silence,” said CFAD founder Nanda Soobben.

This year the TLTL awardees all share a literary heritage. Three respected authors with strong Durban connections who have contributed meaningfully to the process of reconciliation, cultural awareness and nation-building through their writings, will be publicly applauded.

Durban-born retired accountant Aziz Hassim’s debut novel, The Lotus People served as a form of catharsis for Hassim – a personal TRC. He also wished to record a past he is convinced has disappeared forever for the younger generation who think he is "making up stories" when he tells them about that era.

Prithiraj R. Dullay was a student leader at Springfield College and his exposure to contacts with other student leaders such as Steve Biko, Strini Moodley and many more shaped his political consciousness. Dullay’s 278 page acclaimed book Salt Water Runs in My Vein” was launched in May 2010. A second book is due to be published at the end of 2010.

Ashwin Desai, the holder of a Masters degree from Rhodes University and a doctorate from Michigan State University is an unusually prolific and a wide-ranging writer whose work has been published in academic and popular books and periodicals around the world. He has recently published Inside Indian Indenture: A South African Story.

The Edge Award, also to be presented at this gala evening, for Art and Media achievement goes to Jan Jordaan. This award celebrates her contribution and pays tribute to local heroes who have received little or no recognition in the media.

Jan Jordaan initiated the UDHR International Print Portfolio for Artists for Human Rights in Durban, South Africa. He has held many exhibitions both National and International. Presently, he lectures printmaking at the Durban Institute of Technology and functions as director of Art for Humanity.

Erosion of media freedom in South Africa

Nineteen civil societies have signed a memorandum to the government expressing their deep concerns about the roll back in democratic freedoms in South Africa and the recent attempts to strangle the media and the freedom of expression in South Africa.

The Protection of Information Bill creates obstacles for civil society and media groups seeking to expose official malpractices by giving the government extensive powers to prevent the communication of information in the "national interest" on the pain of draconian punishments ranging from a minimum of three years imprisonment, extending up to 25 years. Nanda Soobben on the SA World Cup Team

Nanda Soobben writes:
"There was a cartoon I wanted to do questioning the Bafana Bafana squad just before the start of the World Cup. But I decided against it as I didn't want to spoil the mood that engulfed our country and brought us together as a nation!...Am I being racist by questioning the composition of the Bafana team!? Why would I... I come from the trenches fighting for a non racial society and this team was racially skewed and not the non racial team we dreamt would represent us in the World Cup!!"

Artists for Human Rights Trust sponsors YAP

The Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design thanks the Artists for Human Rights Trust for the part sponsorship of the 2010 Young Artist Programme. Their kind gesture has enabled 10 youngsters who were unable to afford the costs to participate in this unique art programme. The programme began on the 12th of June and will conclude on the 24th June. The public exhibition will be opened on the 3rd July.

Artists for Human Rights Trust History

The first seed for what was to become the Artists for Human Rights Trust germinated in an innovative collaborative project involving artists and human rights activists in KwaZulu/Natal. The prime movers behind the project were Coral Vinsen then a member of the Black Sash and the Durban Detainees Support Committee, and Lorna Ferguson, also of the Black Sash and then curator of the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg. Their aim was to mark the 40th anniversary (on the 10th December 1988) of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly. To this end, a meeting was held early in 1988 to plan an art project to celebrate this special anniversary. As a result, the "Artists for Human Rights" committee was formed, and two events planned to take place on the 10th December 1988 (International Human Rights Day) at the Durban Exhibition Centre. The first of the two events was an interactive art and human rights workshop for 400 teenagers of all race groups held on the morning of the 10th December. Read more...

The World Cup season will see the bus travel daily (except Sunday) from Sat 12 June until 9 July – offering 24 trips in total. The Arts Bus will run every Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday over the season, and the Heritage Bus will run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The idea is for residents to explore their city with comfort and ease; and for visitors to discover some of the arts and heritage treasures which the city has to offer. Packaging day trips makes visits easier with no transport, navigation or parking issues.

A major benefit is that the bus has an onboard guide to explain the attractions en route and to provide a narrative context to all the places to be visited. The bus for both routes will depart daily at 8.30am in front of the old Pavillion site on the beachfront which is used as the World Cup Info Site, ideally for holiday-makers and World Cup visitors to be able to embark. The second stop will be at 9am at the KZNSA Gallery in Glenwood primarily for those wanting to park their cars in the KNZSA car park. Guests can join the bus either at the beachfront Tourist
Info Site (old Pavillion site) at 8.30am or the KZNSA Gallery at 9am.

The Arts Bus takes visitors to some of the premier galleries in the city – with special focus on those galleries who have a World Cup or soccer themed exhibition. It is anticipated that the route will include The KZNSA Gallery; The Durban Art Gallery; The BAT Centre; Artisan Gallery; African Art Centre; Durban University of Technology Gallery, ArtSPACE Durban and the 2010 International and African Fine Art Collection at Suncoast Casino.

The Heritage Route includes: Mazisi Kunene Museum; the KwaMuhle Museum; the Old Court House Museum; Durban Botanic Gardens, the Juma Masjid Mosque and Emmanuel Cathedral. An in depth guided tour through the precious artifacts of the Phansi Museum has also been organized for bus commuters (for a cost of R35 per person). En route passengers will be shown various civic attractions: the John Ross statue; Vasco Da Gama clock; Dick King statue; Fernando Pessoa statue; Port Natal Maritime Museum, the Victoria St Indian Market and City Hall / Post Office precinct.

This will be the third year that the Arts Bus has been running. It has previously been an integral part of the Celebrate Durban September season, but due to its enduring success, the city officials from Ethekwini Municipality have created a platform to run the Arts Bus and its new sister – the Heritage Bus – daily over the World Cup season as an attraction for visitors and residents alike.

Bus entry is free and all are welcome. The only charge will be for the guided tour at the Phansi Museum on the Heritage Bus route. There will be lunch stops factored into the itinerary for passengers to purchase a light meal. Seats are limited so booking is advisable

3rd TALENT CAMPUS DURBAN 23 - 27 July 2010

The Durban International Film Festival has announced that the selection for this year's edition of Talent Campus Durban has been finalised. Over 40 young filmmakers representing nearly 20 African countries, including Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, DRC, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Lesotho, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and of course South Africa, will participate in an intensive five-day programme of workshops and masterclasses. The Talents, who were selected through a rigorous application process, will also have the opportunity to attend screenings and events at the 31st Durban International Film Festival.

The 3rd Talent Campus Durban, themed Focusing on Africa: Unleashing Talent in 2010, will centre activities on the development and strengthening of partnerships between African filmmakers. Talent Campus Durban is held in cooperation with the Berlinale Talent Campus, the eighth edition of which formed part of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival in February this year. Talent Campus is a global partnership and apart from the main event in Berlin, Talent Campus partnerships take place at selected festivals in Buenos Aires, Guadalajara and Sarajevo. It is a considerable privilege and sign of success of the first two editions that DIFF has again been invited to host a Talent Campus.

Monica Rorvik, Assistant manager of the DIFF, comments: "This year's influx of Talent brings an exciting skillset to Campus, with their range of expertise covering acting, editing, directing, producing, and script writing. The Campus will facilitate opportunities to bring Africa's stories to life through the creative vision of these filmmaking talents. While we welcome the new talents with pride we also received the sad news that one of Talent Campus Durban 2009 alumni, El Hadji Samba Sarr (Senegal), died from malaria this month. Samba had also been selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus 2010 and had a project entered into the inaugural Durban FilmMart. The Durban FilmMart, which specifically targets African projects, launches at the festival and runs parallel to Talent Campus."

Another positive sign is that Durban Talent Campus alumni films appear in all sections of this year's festival, including the feature film category. Ugandan Talent Caroline Kamya will attend DIFF to present her debut feature, Imani, which also appeared at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year. The festival will present two first feature length documentaries by previous participants in Talent Campus. Koundi and the National Thursday by Cameroonian Ingrid Atodji is a gorgeous and heartfelt look at life inside a communal society that is negotiating the demands of globalization and the search for uniquely African solutions. South African Carlos Franciso's American Foulbrood looks at the global environmental crisis through the crippling effects of a deadly disease on African honey bees and its possible impact on food production. Short fiction films and documentaries are also in the festival from a number of other Durban and Berlinale Film Festival Talents.

The 3rd Talent Campus Durban is a partnership project between the Durban International Film Festival in cooperation with the Berlinale Talent Campus, Berlin International Film Festival, and is supported by the German Embassy in South Africa, the Goethe-Institut, and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, KwaZulu-Natal.

The Durban International Film Festival is organised by the Centre for Creative Arts (UKZN) with principle funding and support from the National Film & Video Foundation, HIVOS and the City of Durban.

Cast your vote! The good, the bad and the ugly adverts...

Doritos has extended the closing date for its 15 Seconds of Flavour advertising competition, with entrants now having until 21 June 2010 to submit their videos.

Doritos has made four 15-second television adverts to promote its new Collisions flavours but the ads are only half-finished. All entrants have to do is produce an innovative 15-second ending that cleverly refers to the dual nature of Doritos Collisions. After uploading their video clip to the website, they can make use of social networking tools to promote it.  Students of the Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design have submitted a number of entries. The art and design tertiary institution, based in Durban, teaches broadcast graphics, animation and advert production and editing.

Students have been encouraged to enter the Doritos competition to expose their talents. This is a good way to judge public opinion as the winners will be chosen through a public vote. Members of the public may also win their share of R20 000 in cash, merely by rating their favourite Doritos Collisions adverts submitted by South Africa's hottest young creative minds. View the adverts and cast your vote...

Profile of Nanda Soobben

A leading figure in South African arts and journalism; political cartoonist, Nanda Soobben has made a significant contribution to our society by using his artistic skill to make us smile. At the same time his editorial cartoons force us to consider the profound suffering and injustices that have marked our history as a nation. Nanda Soobben is an alumnus of the Durban University Of Technology, having completed his first qualification – a Diploma in Graphic Design – at the ML Sultan Technical College. In 2010 the Durban University of Technology conferred a doctorate on Soobben for his outstanding achievements and contributions.

Soobben has a rare and important gift: being able too engage his audience in a process of reflecting critically on society while making fun of our political leaders and ordinary citizens. Soobben has used his pen and ink more powerfully than the sword in bringing about change and transformation, and he has never hesitated to challenge the authorities in his personal mission to seek out and expose the truth. His book, Witness to a Decade! is a collection of editorial cartoons that is a critical look at South Africa's first ten years of democracy.

He won the 2009 Vodacom Journalist of the Year in the Kwazulu-Natal Cartoon Category. Soobben is an internationally acclaimed cartoonist and has had his socio-political statements, cartoons and illustrations published in newspapers such as the Post, Independent on Saturday, Daily News and the Sunday Tribune. His cartoons are also syndicated to major international newspapers and websites.
Previous honours include three international awards in 2007 alone. These comprised of a Special Congressional Recognition Award at the World Affairs Council, an Amnesty International Award for “showing leadership through his work”.

In 2008, he was awarded a Silver Tusk by the University of Technology Convocation. In 2009 he won the Heritage Award, sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture.

Nanda Soobben’s career spans the era of the liberation struggle, and then the advent of democracy – he drew his first cartoon of Nelson Mandela when he was 22 and Mandela was still in prison. The cartoon centered on the dispute about who the country’s real president was – PW Botha of FW De Klerk? In the cartoon, Margaret Thatcher asks, “Why not Mandela?” Nelson Mandela has a collection of Soobben’s Mandela Cartoons that was presented to him as a birthday gift by movie entrepreneur Anant Singh.

The late South African academic and leading activist, Fatima Meer, wrote the following in the Preface to Soobben’s second book: “Nanda Soobben is the first cartoonist emerging from the previously disadvantaged communities of the apartheid era. His works is in itself a measure of our achievements as a democracy in the last decade”.

As a high profile “black” political cartoonist, Nanda Soobben worked throughout the years of apartheid under the watchful eye of the South African censors. His cartoons appeared in the alternative press, where he had to be very subtle to get his message across. Though he held a qualification in Graphic Design, he was unable to find a job because these were reserved as “whites only” positions. Instead, he worked as a sign writer in Durban. Finally, in 1980 he began as a cartoonist with Post Natal. Soobben has lived in Brazil and the United States and studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York and the San Francisco Art Institute.

Soobben painted a series of watercolours for a groundbreaking exhibition called “Cato Manor – People Were Living There!”. This series of paintings told the story of forced removals and the Group Areas Act and how this impacted on the people of this once non racial part of Durban. Soobben made a presentation at the World Affairs Council in San Francisco entitled “My life as a black Political Cartoonist in Apartheid South Africa”. He also painted the mural for Eco 92 in Rio de Janeiro and a peace mural in New York, which was the subject of a documentary on ABC Television.

When he returned to South Africa after Mandela’s release he began his long – running cartoon, “The Otherside”, for The Natal Witness. In the 1990s Nanda Soobben produced cartoons for the Independent on Saturday.
South African journalist and business executive Kaizer Nyatsumba writes of Soobben: “To be counted among (apartheid’s) innumerable sins is the fact not only that hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of our darker hued South Africans’ innate talents lay undiscovered, but there is also ignoble fact that there are many others whose talents were not allowed to be displayed before a bigger audience and to flourish”.

In 1994 he founded the Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design in Durban.

About the Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design

The Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design (CFAD) is a tertiary institution that offers training in Fine Art, Animation (2D and 3D) and Graphic Design.  The CFAD was established in 1994 by world-renowned cartoonist, illustrator and journalist Nanda Soobben.  Prior to the establishment of the CFAD various individuals approached Nanda Soobben with the desire to learn his skills.  It was from this need in the community that the institution was born. In recognition of his contribution to South African society and for establishing this institution, Nanda Soobben received the San Francisco Leadership Award. The Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design has developed an integrated fine art, graphic design and animation diploma that equip artists with marketable skills.  In the past many fine art graduates found it difficult to secure jobs, however graduates of CFAD have found it easier to secure employment in the local printing, advertising and media industry.  Several successful graduates are now employed internationally.

Nanda Soobben, Krish Moodley, Academic Head of CFAD, and a team of dedicated artists and designers have developed the institution into a leading Centre of Design excellence in Durban.  Today, students from as far a field as the United States, Japan, India, Botswana and Zimbabwe are registered at the institution. As part of its commitment to quality education the institution is registered with the Department of Education, South African Qualifications Authority and the Council on Higher Education as a Private Higher Education Institution.

Students have found an enjoyable, creative and productive environment at the CFAD, where all the lecturers and support staff are established artists in their own fields. CFAD is a leader in the field of animation, where the latest technology is used to teach students how to produce traditional animation and broadcast quality animation.
